Selection for Attraction

چکیده

In this paper we study the evolutionary potential of a reactive attraction mechanism in a population of agents that interact via cooperation games, as exemplified by the noisy iterated prisoner’s dilemma. Attraction makes an agent unconditionally cooperative toward an attractive opponent, hence introducing a parallel relation between agents, independent from the social interaction context itself, i.e. from the game. An additional partner selection mechanism can exploit such a given psychological condition and discover attracted partners, despite the fact that attraction itself is nowhere represented in the agent reasoning mechanism but is modeled as an uncontrollable process. We show how evolution can select attraction at various levels of increasing complexity and how each level triggers the selection of the next one, provided the corresponding mechanisms emerge behaviorally. We also discuss the implications of these experiments for the study of the evolution of complex cognitive capacities and functionalities.

Commentary Th e role of attraction in cultural evolution *

Henrich and Boyd (2002) were the first to propose a formal model of the role of attraction in cultural evolution. Th ey came to the surprising conclusion that, when both attraction and selection are at work, final outcomes are determined by selection alone. Th is result is based on a determistic view of cultural attraction, different from the probabilistic view introduced in Sperber (1996). We ...

Basins of Attraction and Equilibrium Selection Under Different Learning Rules

A deterministic learning model applied to a game with multiple equilibria produces distinct basins of attraction for those equilibria. In symmetric two-by-two games, basins of attraction are invariant to a wide range of learning rules including best response dynamics, replicator dynamics, and fictitious play. In this paper, we construct a class of three-by-three symmetric games for which the ov...

Emergence of Social Networks in Systems with Attraction

In this paper we study the effect of a reactive attraction mechanism in a population of agents that can develop partner preferences. We use as base task for agent pair interaction the benchmark IPD game in its noisy version. Attraction makes an agent unconditionally cooperative toward an attractive opponent, hence introducing a parallel relation between agents, independent from the social inter...
